Mogi das Cruzes has the largest commercial center of the Alto Tietê Region, with approximately 5 thousand commercial establishments that generate 16 thousand jobs. The growth of this sector has improved greatly and continuously. The commerce is attractive and diversified in all fields, offering a great range of shopping options for the population, attracting consumers from the entire region and helping to reinforce the municipality’s financial stability, in particular the “calçadão” [pedestrian street] at Rua Dr. Deodato Wertheimer and Rua Paulo Frontin, the traditional Farmer’s Market located in the Mogilar neighborhood, where every Sunday thousands of consumers gather, seeking quality fresh produce; and the Mogi Shopping Center installations, inaugurated ten years ago which occupies an area of 74 thousand sqm, and provides 1,200 direct jobs for the community, holds 165 stores and a parking lot for 2,000 cars; and the Mercado Municipal, one of the most traditional historical points in Mogi das Cruzes. There are 114 stalls where consumers can find everything, from fruits and vegetables, flowers, typical Japanese products, fish markets, meat markets, emporiums, to delicacies such as the pastel, tempura, and homemade sweets. The city has two main entities representing the commercial sector: the Associação Comercial de Mogi das Cruzes [Mogi das Cruzes Commercial Association] and the Sindicato do Comércio Varejista, the Sincomercio [The Retail Commerce Trade Union].

The IPC (Index of Potential Consume), measures the economical participation of the municipalities in the national scenario, Mogi takes 18th place in the state ranking of purchase power and the 59th place among the 5,564 Brazilian municipalities.
