Basic Sanitation
Mogi das Cruzes is one of the few cities in the State to maintain its own autarchy, responsible for collecting, treating and distributing water, as well as collecting sewage. This refers to the Municipal Water and Sewage Service, which has invested greatly in improving the services it offers to the population. A great example is the treatment of sewage. Until the year 2000, less than 1% of the city’s collected sewage received treatment. By September 2006, this percentage had risen to 45%. But this is still not enough. The City Hall is implementing large public works which will improve these numbers even further. The established goal is to surpass the 90% mark by 2008. These works will also improve water supply to the city, which already reaches 98% of the urban population.
